Henry Michael Jones VC (1831–1916)

Born in Dublin, Henry Jones entered the Army as an Ensign in the 18th Regiment of Foot in April 1854. During the Crimean War, he was serving in the 7th Royal Fusiliers, first as a Lieutenant, then a Captain. On 7th June 1855, during the Siege of Sebastopol, he was part of the party that took the Quarries. Despite being wounded early in the evening, he proceeded to lead his men in repelling the repeated enemy assaults on their position during the night and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions (Gazetted 25th September 1857). He left the Army in June 1858, and served all over the world as part of the British Diplomatic Service until 1898, when he retired to Eastbourne, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was buried at Eastbourne Cemetery with full military honours.
